Looking over the stern of a boat.The Nautical Know How Basic Boating Safety Course is made available to educate and provide information to anyone interested in boating and boating safety. The objectives of the course are to make the general public aware of the following:

This course is designed to introduce a boater to legal and safe boating practices. It applies to all who use a boat, whether as skipper or as someone simply along for the fun.

It is primarily designed to address the requirements of smaller recreational vessels, although some mention of larger vessels does appear. Again, we encourage you to use this course as a starting point in your continuing boating education.

How to Take the Course

All of the pages have a minimum set time that you must spend studying the material. The total time required to complete the course is 6 hours. You can take as long as you want, but you must spend a minimum of 6 hours, including the time spent taking the tests.

To receive your Virginia Boating Certificate, you must complete the following chapters, chapters 3 through 9, and pass the 7 chapter tests. You cannot go to the next chapter unless you score 90% or above on the current chapter test. If you do not pass the test, you will be directed to the beginning of the chapter to study the material again.

Once you have completed all 7 of the chapter tests, you will be able to print your temporary certificate. Your permanent documents will be mailed to you.
